Of course the news has been wall-to-wall not only nationally, but globally, referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoking the Emergencies Act to deal with the protests of truckers in Ottawa, Coutts Border Crossing, and other locations. As the convoy has grown not only in members but support on a global scale, it was clear Justin Trudeau had to do something as this was in direct contravention to his pandemic ideals he has had for the past 2 years. Not only is the Emergencies Act rash, but as people can see from the live feed it is not needed. One look at @rupasubramanya‘s Twitter you can see, none of the truckers are violent, none of them have a goal of overturning the government, just want mandates to end and cause ‘good trouble’ as the lefty activists of old would say.
So much so, that she was penned to write an article in Bari Weiss’s Substack titled: What the Truckers Want observing the actions on the ground by talking to truckers in the crowd. Still, a lot are not convinced of the aims and goals of this protest and feel it is a danger, and in an example of amazing irony, feel like they cannot leave their house and are massively inconvenienced.
However, something interesting has happened. As I discussed, wall-to-wall media has been on top of this story, and it has largely been positive for the truckers. Sure, the national media paid by the federal government is not happy, but positive stories from the BBC, Sky News, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal have all tempered their vitriol of the so called ‘low hanging fruit’ of workers driving trucks. Of course political news has their takes (because COVID has been and continues to be political) with Fox News (CR) and independent media like The Hill Rising (C), Breaking Points with Krystal (L) and Saagar (CR), Jimmy Dore (L), Bill Maher (CL) and Joe Rogan (CL) all supporting the truckers. With CNN and MSNBC (L on the outside R on the inside) all running contra. Needless to say, it is clear more support the convoy given the massive audience it has garnered on sites that get more traffic in one hour, than what CNN might gain in an entire daytime.
Note: () denote the political leanings (CR) – Center Right, (CL) – Center Left, (L) – Left, (R) – Right.
It was one story that struck with me, left-wing neoliberal newspaper The Toronto Star (L) put out an article titled: Invoking the Emergencies Act is a Shocking Admission of Failure. Now, The Toronto Star throughout the pandemic has — as the kids say — simped hard for the Trudeau Liberals with many of the draconian measures agreed upon, but this was a surprising tone for sure. They still had their blithering about the protests, but they really called Trudeau and federal leadership out for being brash and “owning this crisis”.
Now you have media from all corners of the world with their eyes on Canada, most media disagrees with how the government is acting and agreeing with the truckers, and even more left-wing media is calling out Trudeau, the government, and mainstream media that opposes the convoy. On top of this, Conservatives are gaining support, and members of Trudeau’s Liberal cabinet calling him out on his divisive rhetoric.
From this standpoint, the truckers have already won, and Trudeau has lost.
This is a wildly negative heel-turn from the man who called for sunny ways back in 2015 to benevolent despotism in 2022. Trudeau’s own hubris got the better of him, and like another former world leader, could not let go of the narrative less it make him feel weak. You know who I am talking about, ironically enough, many similarities in this instance compare Trudeau to Trump — sure Trump would have wildly different policies, but their mannerisms are similar. Trudeau and Trump — like toddlers — cannot cope when they cannot have their way and are petulant in the face of criticism. Furthermore, instead of apologizing for doing something incorrectly, they just double-down and continue digging their own hole.
Perhaps people have had enough of Trudeau, after all, of the 28 political scandals that have happened in Canada since our founding in 1867, Justin Trudeau has been involved in 6 of them. From the SNC-Lavalin affair, to the WE Charity Controversy, to the case of blackface, Trudeau has been rightly criticized for his failure of leadership on many occasions, it has happened again and the world is watching.
Even with more and more provinces, states, and countries lifting restrictions and declaring an end to COVID, Trudeau is still hanging on and the main question is why? He had the chance to make amends and talk with the truckers to have them air their grievances to him. Many other MP’s talked with the truckers, as the leader of a country could he have simply brought evidence for continued mandates on his side to show the truckers why they are needed? I wrote a piece a while back about the neo-cosmopolitans and their embrace of narcissism, arrogance, and hypocrisy and this is a pure example of it right here.
I think people are seeing this as well, Trudeau looks like the bully who is insecure of his own leadership capabilities and cannot handle criticism. Not to mention, caving to the lowest polling president ever (Joe Biden) to invoke stricter penalties does not help considering most people — according to polls — take Joe Biden as seriously as a conversation with a telemarketer. If the truckers are feeling down about this decision, don’t think of it that way, think of the Emergency Act as the government pulling their goalie with a minute-thirty left on the clock. Yes, its 6 on 5, but that means you are up a goal or two. So be smart, control the puck, clear all the badness out of your end, and hold out till the buzzer, its coming soon.
